Gone are the days when meeting people online meant hanging out in dodgy chat rooms, and using fake details was par for the course. Now there are a host of ways to make friends online, with social networks like Twitter and meetup.com making it easy and acceptable to engage with strangers. Online dating has come a long way too, and now it's a mainstream way to get on the dating scene.
It's so big in the UK in fact that there are dozens of dating sites to choose from. Whether you want a casual hook-up, a long-term relationship or anything in between, there's a site for you. If you believe in astrology, you can date based on your star-sign. For those of a more scientific bent, some dating sites offer compatibility tests based on psychological research. Others just let you search based on criteria of your choosing. This might all sound fun, but before you pick a site it's worth thinking about what you want out of a relationship. If you want a long-term partner for example, it's no use joining a site aimed at casual dating.
Once you've chosen your dating site, what about your profile? Writing about yourself is difficult at the best of times, but when you rely on your profile to attract interest it can feel like a minefield. The best advice is to be honest, stay positive but don't give away too much. Very personal information like where you live or work should of course stay private, but don't be afraid to talk about your hobbies and interests, no matter how obscure. If you're really into knitting or you go to a car boot sale every Sunday, put that in your profile. Not only will it make you stand out from the crowd, you'll be contacted by people who genuinely share the same interests.
