Safety Abroad

by Oksana Boichenko

Once you have decided to travel overseas to meet your Russian bride, don't let the euphoria of the upcoming event overshadow common sense. While you might not be traveling to dangerous places, you might want to follow a few points to make sure you are not taken advantage of as a foreigner.

When traveling abroad, especially to the FSU countries, the best thing to do is to keep a low profile. Showing a lot of money and making it obvious that you are from a foreign country is likely to bring you more trouble than gain. Some crooks "specialize" in pursuing foreigners, and have select schemes worked out to play on your lack of language knowledge and the surroundings, so the best thing is to blend with the crowd.

Another thing to keep in mind is the cultural differences. Things that might be common to you, might not be the norm (or even offensive) in some other countries. We suggest you do your homework before traveling abroad to find out what is typical for a particular culture. For example, in former Soviet countries, when you come to visit a home, it is considered good manners to bring something for the hostess (candy, wine, flowers, etc). We are not suggesting that you change yourself, simply show some courtesy, understanding and flexibility.

Finding a reliable translator could be your solution to many issues while overseas. Having such a person with you for the duration of a trip has multiple advantages. In addition to solving any language problems, a true professional will also be able to consult and guide you on the cultural matters and serve as a pretty good guarantee that questionable acquaintances will stay away (it is much more difficult to cheat someone once a local person is accompanying you). Having a native by your side can also help you save a few extra bucks on souvenirs and tickets to various events - some people will want to charge more knowing you are from abroad.

Being selective is also a good trait to adopt for the time of travel. If you are daring enough to venture out on your own, remember to be observant and pay attention to a lady's company and body language to avoid getting stuck with a scammer or someone interested in your money. We would suggest to attend clubs with a group of people to avoid any misunderstandings. The best way to arrange meetings, however, is through a trusted dating site, as such organizations can give you more background about a particular lady and take responsibility for organizing your meetings, making them safe and convenient.

Money is an important issue to consider when you take a trip overseas. Plan and budget, so you are not left stranded without cash in a foreign land. You might not be able to evaluate exactly your possible expenses, but at least make sure that you have a 'safety cushion' of funds available should you unexpectedly run out of money or in case of emergency. We also suggest getting information about the country's currency and financial services in advance - for example, some places have difficulty accepting traveler's cheques, while others don't like credit cards. Cash is the most acceptable option, however, it might also require some planning. For example, some places might not have banks or exchanges open on the weekend - think about your cash needs before the weekend rolls around. We also suggest that you use banks to exchange currency instead of kiosks at the airports or on the street. The banks might offer a bit lower rate, but at least they guarantee accuracy and reliability. You might also consider keeping your money in several places in case it is lost or stolen.

A choice between an apartment and a hotel can also result in increased safety. Renting an apartment is generally a safer and more reliable option. Most rental apartment owners take pride in keeping good reputation and put their best efforts to accommodate visitors from abroad. Staying in an apartment reduces your chances of being robbed or taken advantage of. If you choose to stay in the hotel, your belongings might be less safe, and it is best to keep valuables out of sight.

Finally, you should also take a few precautions regarding your documents. Keep them with you at all times; do not give them to anyone without a reason for it. We would also suggest making a notarized copy of the essentials (passport, tickets, driver's license, etc) to keep on hand should anything happen to the originals.

Of course, each trip and situation will be different, but when all else fails - use your common sense. Be attentive to the surroundings and follow your gut instinct; if you are uncomfortable in a place or situation, it is best to leave than regret your choices later.
